Tricky Homework and School Assignments
School homework and assignments are usually fun, but some can be really tricky for adopted kids!
Some assignments, such as bring in a baby picture, make a family tree and cultural heritage projects, require the student to bring up their adoption in a classroom setting, which they may not be ready to talk about openly. Some assignments can be emotionally upsetting, since they require photos or knowledge of things that the child has no idea about.
If the assignment is uncomfortable for the child, parents should talk to their child’s teacher to request for modification so your child has the option of not disclosing their adoption or can avoid an uncomfortable situation.
This guide to adoption awareness in school assignments provides good suggestions for how families can connect with the teachers to address these situations.
