Masturbation in Preschoolers

Many young children play with their genitals and this is normal behavior for ages 2-6.

Children with poor self-esteem or those needing release from tension may be more prone to self-stimulation. However, this can be an uncomfortable topic for parents to handle. It is generally not a problem, though girls may suffer from inflammation of the genital area or urinary tract infections if there is excessive friction. Depending on the age, the parent can distract the child with other activities, provide other ways to calm a child and discuss (without embarrassing or scaring the child) that this is private behavior. Consult with your pediatrician if you are uncomfortable talking to your child about this.
